Parkinson’s Disease: More Than a Tremor
Every April, we recognize Parkinson’s Awareness Month and the disease’s impact on our communities.
More than 110,000 people in Canada live with Parkinson’s, with more than 17,500 British Columbians living with the disease, but its effects extend far beyond those diagnosed.
Loved ones, caregivers, and even workplaces feel the ripple effects of this condition.
At Rutland Medical Pharmacy, we are committed to supporting those affected by Parkinson’s by providing resources, medication guidance and compassionate care.
This year, the Parkinson Society British Columbia is spreading the message that Parkinson’s is “more than a tremor”—it presents a wide range of symptoms, both motor and non-motor, that can significantly impact daily life.
What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that occurs when the brain loses dopamine-producing cells.
Dopamine is a crucial chemical that helps regulate movement and coordination.
As dopamine levels decrease, people with Parkinson’s experience motor symptoms, such as:
Tremors – Involuntary shaking, often in the hands
Stiffness – Muscle rigidity that makes movement difficult
Bradykinesia – Slowed movement, making simple tasks take longer
Postural instability – Balance problems that can lead to falls
However, Parkinson’s is more than just a movement disorder. It also causes non-motor symptoms, which are often less recognized but can be equally challenging:
Cognitive changes – Memory issues, difficulty focusing, or slowed thinking
Sleep disturbances – Trouble falling or staying asleep, vivid dreams, or daytime fatigue
Mental health challenges – Anxiety, depression, and mood fluctuations
Autonomic dysfunction – Digestive issues, low blood pressure, and changes in blood circulation
Managing Parkinson’s
While there is no cure for Parkinson’s, there are ways to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
Treatments include:
Medication – Helps regulate dopamine levels and manage symptoms
Exercise – Activities like boxing, dance, and tai chi can improve mobility and balance
Mental wellness support – Therapy, mindfulness, and peer support can help with emotional well-being
Community connections – Support groups and advocacy networks provide valuable resources and encouragement
Raise Awareness & Support the Parkinson’s Community
Parkinson’s affects a diverse group of individuals, each with their own story. By expanding public understanding, we can challenge misconceptions, advocate for better resources, and create a more compassionate and informed society.
